Wide swing hinges?
« on: March 12, 2019, 10:24:22 am »
I'm looking for 2 types of hinges, couldn't find anything suitable in Home Depot.
One, I would like 180° hinge (or 360°?) I need to mount it so both panels are in-line not 90°, but open to outside and folds flat on surface that is next to (take a look at the drawing. I'm not sure how to explain it better.) I would like as small gap as possible between the panels. It could push the panel out as it opens, that's ok.

2nd something similar I guess, but I would like to push it out a lot more out of the way. Again look at the drawing to hopefully understand it.

I needed two panels to swing very similarly in my cabinet, and solved it by having two sets of hinges:

It ended up being very functional for my purposes, but maybe not the most elegant solution.

Yes, that's basically what I'm looking for, except I want the hinges to be hidden and not on the outside. "Not elegant" is kind of the key here. Thanks for the ideas though.

EDIT: Could I do it reversed, with your method? On the inside. Double gap wouldn't bother me as much as visible hinges.

I would think so. I would try to route out a pocket for the hinge though.  :dunno

I'm open to anything that looks as neat as possible on my cabinet. If you could elaborate I don't have much experience with these sort of things.

Got a pic of the pieces you want to hinge and how they line up together? I'm having a tough time visualizing this from your drawing (of just the hinges right?), and might be thinking about this wrong.

In my solution we actually ended up moving the piano hinge from the sides to the inside, so it's not visible except for the metal flash in the gap. I'm thinking you could do the same for the second hinge as well.
If they were black hinges, I'm guessing the show-through in the gap would be pretty minor.

Just cut them to the right lengths.

photos to help you visualize

In the 2nd example it supposed to swing out and fold. Minimal gap between the moving panel and the solid/static? part would be nice to see.

EDIT: Dang it didn't realize they got captured sideways!

Dang it. Black hinge would be pretty good for what I need, but $20 + tax + shipping seem high comparing to something similar what I got in silver at HD for ~$6

So many experienced people in wood working and no one else any ideas, besides newmanfamilyvlogs (thank you)?

Seems to me using the visible hinge somewhat as intended, and routing the (out)side of the cabinet for the mounted half to fit in would give you what you needed, and be less visible, less visible than that by painting it, even less visible if you routed a little deeper and puttied over it, etc.....

I moved the biggest hinge internal after that shot was taken:

Are you looking for the doors to swing all the way and be flush with the sides?  Honest, I tried looking at all your photos but I couldn't make heads or tails of it.

If you need a solution to swing the doors all the way out of the way, I used these https://www.rockler.com/270deg-overlay-hinge
for my build.
