GroovyMAME 0.204 on Windows XP
« on: March 11, 2019, 02:10:00 pm »
Hello everyone !

I have a little trouble getting GroovyMAME 0.204 to work properly on my arcade cabinet.

I'm using Windows XP 64bit, and i already have GroovyMAME 0.164 installed and working fine.
But i also want to use GM 0.204 for some specific games (that don't run on GM 0.164)

The problem is, that when i'm using GM 0.204, even if the super resolutions are loaded, the image is wrong.

Did i miss something ?

Here's my log :

Wrong in what sense?
Important note: posts reporting GM issues without a log will be IGNORED.
Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

The image is a bit crushed, it does not fill the top and bottom of the screen.
And also, the text in the MAME's info box (before the game start) is not very readable : lines are missing

That's expected.

Yes ?
But how come that this don't happen when i'm using GM 0.164 ?
With GM 0.164, games look perfect, the screen is entirely filled, and the text in MAME's info boxes is clear.

But when i launch a game with GM 0.204, i can clearly see the difference, i'ts ugly, there's no other word

Gandalf68, your log shows everything working great. 224p doesn't usually fill the screen, depending on your v-size monitor adjustment you'll probably see borders up and down. Text in MAME's info boxes has been blurry for years. 0.164 filling the screen at 224p may probably have been bad configuration, I don't know. A picture will help. A log from 0.164 will help too.

Once again, you're right.

The fact is that this particular game (Ninja Kazan) does not fill the entire screen, unlike almost all my other games, which has been misleading. And the fact that the text in the MAME'info box is less readable in 0.204 than in 0.164 also led me to think that there was a problem.

The funny thing is that i tried another game, (Spelunker) and this time it was the other way around -> the image is too large vertically and thus, i don't see the player's score... But it happens in 0.164 and in 0.204 so i guess that it's expected too

But why does this happen in this game in particular and not in the others ? And is there a way to have the image fill perfectly the screen ?

Here's the log for this game (with 0.164)

Because of its height, its native total lines, it's basic stuff. Check this:

OK, so the only way to fill the screen completely (while keeping the right resolution) is to use to V-Size potentiometer ?

An external one like in the video is soooo cool !  :applaud:
... then maybe it's time for me to work on a way to build an external one for my cabinet !  ;)

Can i ask you another question please ?

In GM 0.204, when i launch a game that require more GPU, like "Carnival" or "Time Crisis", we hear all the sounds twice, like there is an echo. I'm guessing that this is because my system is not powerful enough but is there a way to fix the problem ? Because the games runs smoothly, it's just the sounds that are bugged

If you get sound stuttering it's probably because you're not maintaining framerate, press F11 to check. Anything under 100% is bad.

About v-size, there is a sweet spot that will allow you to play most games up to 256 height without the bars being too big or losing too much off the top and bottom.
On my cabinet, I have small bars for 224 high games (e.g CPS2) and lose a small amount for 256 height games (e.g. Irem games).
Anything over 256 height I use interlaced modes for, it actually works well enough for me that I don't feel the need for a second vertical cabinet.

Ok that's a good advice -> i will search for that sweet spot  ;)
