r83 popping sound when amp kicks in

when record is selected one switch turns on turntable and the other one turns on amp. amp switch makes a popping sound thru the speakers before record starts. I can do it manually with a small screwdriver. is it because the switch contacts are bad and switch needs to be replaced?  Please Help.  Thanks.
