Area 51: Site 4
« on: August 30, 2018, 01:31:49 pm »
So I have finally got to pick up the Area 51 cab :)

Which means I now have my first original arcade cab :)

So its not a orignal A51, Its a PAC cab that has been converted, Everything works except the marquee light and I cant get the coin door open at the moment but I will work on that!
The bodywork is not bad really but has quite a few small chunks missing, The T molding is knackered and the CP perspex is shattered and needs replacing. Ime not keen on the grey though so I am thinking I may re-cover it with black vinyl or something then add some artwork on ime not really sure atm. So even though its not that bad I still have a fair bit to do with it really.

I wont really be doing anything on it for a while as the wedding is draining all my useable funds and ime still trying to scrape enough to come see you crazy bunch at zapcon for our honeymoon :p

So I guess this is a notice of works for a resto project atm so dont expect any updates for quite some time :p

Anyways heres a pic for now, Ile get some more up later once I have some better light to work with.

Did consider drilling through the back from the service door but it looks like its a big steel box at the back?
Hard to tell tbh.

Funny you say that.....

When I brought it I was told it was a A51 & Max force duo. But its defo 51 site 4. But they guys sure I can change a dip to make it boot max force? Didnt know that was a thing tbh but ile have a tinker at some point.

As for my coin door prob I defo cant go in from the back, Theres a large steel coin collector in the way
Also means I can go from the top as I wouldn't be able to get my hand down the back to get to the nut so I need to get the door open somehow....

Congrats on your first real cab. If you make it to Zapcon we have to sit down to a few good pints. I will even wait until it warms up to room temperature.

Little update for this morning.....

I broke into that damn coin door!

This sucker is proper heavy duty with 6mm thick steel plate door and a 10mm thick spring loaded deadbolt at the back!

No permanent damage done so ime happy!
Now I can actually see the back it would of been easy to throw it over by wedging a angled o ring pick or something in the teeth to throw it over but I couldn't see or feel that before
But if anyone else ever comes across one of these monsters in the future you will know haha.
Anyways lock replaced and refitted the door.

Also found out why the marquee light doesn’t work - Its not there! LOL so think my next task will be to nab a small light fitting from work and wire it into the cabs mains.

Whatever you do Titch don't get rid of that sticker above the coin door.  It adds so much character.

Malenko - Might I suggest taking off your shoes when you are going in the back door?  Then you might get back door because of your back door etiquette.

And remember pints should only be drank from the type of pint glass pictured below.  Not one of the american atrocities.

Small update for the day, New marquee light installed.

I opted for a 12” LED fitting to drop between the speakers.

It gives of a good light but think I need to get a reflector behind it to throw the light into the corners a bit more.

Small update for the day, The HDD has now been swapped out!

I originally intended on using the CF flash method as I mentioned before, However turns out that Site 4 does not play nice with CF cards so that went out of the window.
I next looked into IDE SD card readers which are reported to work as long as they have a certain chip set, Which of course is now obsolete and unobtainable....

SOOOOO

After some more digging a Guy over on the KLOV had used a IDE to SATA adapter and used a SATA SSD module to install the game on,
So I tracked the bits down on Ebay and for the pricely sum of around £15 got the adapter and a 16gb module (Which are tiny!) and everything is now working great without the damn HDD whirling!

Incase anyone is interested in doing the same in the future the adapter was just a standard IDE/SATA adapter and the module was a Apacer 16GB MLC SATA Module.

You can use a IDE to CF adapter on 51 MF.
Its just the site 4 board thats a awkward mofo!

I never took any pics before plugging it in (not much point now its so small its lost in there!)

But heres some links:

Adapter:

SSD module:

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F132677710159

But you can use one of these on 51 mf:

Out of the back burner and back to life now the wedding is out of the way!

So me and the new Mrs Titchgamer had a day together vinyl coating the cab and putting new T moulding in.

So first off a bit of sanding and filling....

There was more damage but ya get the idea ime sure lol

Next I cleaned the whole thing with isopropanol and then we started on the Pedestal and 1 side. Original plan was to 2 tone it black and the original Grey underneath a bit like this:

However when we considered the Firey CP art we decided it wouldnt fit right so we ended up coating the whole thing.

Neither of us had ever done any vinyl wrapping but we are both pleased with the results and we had some fun together.
We made some mistakes along the way but nothing drastic.

Sadly I couldn’t save the machine emptied over night sticker but I will get a new one to replace it as I liked that.

Next job is CP, Bezel and side logo art.

I am working on some custom side logos, Planing on using the original firey CP but not sure about the bezel yet....
