Outrun 2 FXT 2.5 Released!
« on: December 04, 2017, 12:12:13 am »
As promised here is a minor, yet important update to the wrapper.  The only new feature is joystick override, which allows you to force the joystick/gamepad/wheel you wish to use if the game keeps defaulting to the first joystick.  Oh and hey, I managed to update the website and add the wrapper there!

Find the release on the old DragonKing website:  http://dragonking.arcadecontrols.com/index.php

Thanks guys.  Just let me know if you run into any new issues.  I only added in 5 or 6 lines of code, but you never know.

Looks cool.  But I'm trying to find a PC version online to purchase.  Seems like Steam released and then pulled it.  :-\

Yeah Sega lost the Ferrari license some time ago, so you won't find it anywhere digitally.  At least not legally.

Cheapest, I've seen is $20 from the UK for a boxed version.  Any idea if it's the same release worldwide?

It's a far cry from $2.50 on Steam, but it's doable.

There is a multi region dvd version... that is the version I use.  From all reports, the exe is pretty much the same regardless of versions though.... they just added some additional language packs for a few of the euro releases.

It's really not too hard to find a copy via 'other means'. I've got two legit copies of the PC version downloaded on my two regular PCs, but I had to acquire a third via less salubrious means when I wanted to stick another copy on my MAME bartop several year later to incorporate it into a 3 player Outrun C2C network.

I think at this point, for research into the patch I have every version of the game ever released.  I didn't pay for all of them, but I've paid for enough to where I don't feel guilty about it.

I'm hoping some day it will pay off and I can incorporate the extra stages into the pc version, but at this point it might be less man hours to re-create the game engine and all of it's content from scratch.   How long have I been working on this now, 4 years?  ;)

Yeah, likewise. As well as the PC version I've previously bought 2 copies of Outrun 2 and 2 copies of Outrun C2C on the Xbox and Outrun Online Arcade on the PS3, so I feel I've contributed enough to not feel bad about the couple of versions I didn't pay for.

 If Sega ever regain the Ferrari license (unlikely I know) they should definitely stick you on the payroll with the intent of creating an 'Ultimate' version of Outrun 2, with ALL the content from ALL of the games.

Happy Holidays gentlemen!

I've been meaning to come on here and let you guys know how much I've been enjoying O2K6 with Howard's FXT patch recently. I've been away from racing games since around April so when I came back to play this, it put a huge smile on my face the entire time. I don't know if it's just placebo or the fact that I've been away from the game for so long, but something about the steering input to me feels more...."connected" if you will. The car seems to be responding to my analog steering inputs better than I remember it. The steering feels so smooth and "on the money" so to speak. There isn't even a hint of deadzone and it feels really great. Perhaps I finally got the settings dialed it to where I want them right before I stopped playing many months ago and forgot how good it felt lol.

Anyway I will grab this new version of FXT shortly and try it out.

Howard.....going by your comments above, I'm not sure but are you confirming that the Steam version of OR2K6 works with FXT now? I remember trying it a while back and it didn't inject into the the steam version at all, only the CD version. If not, can you please consider adding support to the Steam version?

The CD version has been known to give me odd graphical glitches every now and then. For example when going from one stage to the next, sometimes the camera will suddenly jump to some weird zoomed out helicopter view of the track for like 2 seconds, and then jump back to the normal camera view. Very jarring and bizarre.

Heck, I remember this even happened on my copy of the original Xbox verison many years ago. The Steam version however, never exhibited any of these issues.

You could be right on that... been working on this for years after all, I can't remember everything.  ;)  I don't have a problem looking at the steam version, but unless it's easily fixable.... man.... I've probably got 70 memory addresses I alter at this point.

Arcade-style LAN menu's would still be great, so that my twin cab would be able to play O2K6 like a real twin cabinet with the arcade menu's instead of having to create/join games PC style...
I believe an attempt has been made by Howard a while ago, but I assume this is somehow halted?

It wasn't halted.... I just quit working on it for now.  This one is an all-consuming she-beast of a project and if I don't take breaks periodically I get burnt out.  When I stopped I couldn't reliably manipulate the menu variables so when I start up again I have to fix that and then the rest of the code will be rather trivial.

Boomslang:  Yeah it's fun isn't it.  A lot of my projects rarely get used by me, but every time I fire up fxt I have a blast.

I'm having issues with the game running way too fast. I'm running full screen 6060x1080. My desktop is running at 5760x1080 @ 144Hz and I am guessing that at some point in the game goes windowed and back to full screen but then runs at the desktop resolution at insanely high speeds. Aside from just setting my desktop up to 6060x1080 @ 60 are there any solutions to this?

Most modern video cards have a gaming profile section where you can set specific video card settings on a per game basis.  Add outrun 2006 as a profile and force vsync.... that should do it, unless you have your monitor set to a really high refresh rate.

Read the readme and work some stuff out, everyone else has managed to get this working without needing video chat run through's

ok I write here
first problem
when I start the game and go to command settings, the selection menu scrolls on itself continuously and does not stop ... from top to bottom ... and if I try to configure the accelerator and brake it does not give me time to do it. ..
I have a g27
I was hoping someone would help me in real time maybe with my screen sharing, or have a step by step guide, from the logitech profiler to the FXT settings
I love this game and I would like it to work better!
thank you all :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

The clutch pedal causes the the menu to scroll.

If you can hold th clutch pedal exactly halfway down while in the menu, it will not scroll.

I have the same bug, but is harmlesss, for some reazon with Overlay ON in the car selection screen instead of the “Not Avaliable” sprite the radio appears. It goes away if you buy the car in the Showroom.

Fixed see below (tl:dr disable force feedback in the FxtConfig)

OP:
Hey HC! Dude good job juse reinstalled OR2K6 again and found this when googling mods for it!  So I started with a vergin copy and the 2.5 release and I am sad to report that it doesn't seem to work.  The only thing I am atempting to do is make the game start the game in ORSP2 mode and have rumble capability.  The game loads normally with that option.  Not sure about the other things.  I play with a Xbox controller so I don't need the other setting.  Created an account just to post to you and help you bug test.

Edit:  Just tried your 2.4 version and it also doesn't work. I'm runnng windows 10.  Could that be it?
Edit2:  Went back over the readme and tried to click on the debug consol and it doesn't load.  It actually crashes in the background while I play the game.  Any ideas?

Edit3:  Ok got it to work once my wireless 360 controller disconnected due to activity.  So no 360 controller it starts and works fine (doesn't crash) but I can't use my controller for gameplay (funny thing is if I turn it on while the game is running I get rumble in it when I hit something).  So getting somewhere.  I'm still on the 2.4 version.

Edit 4:  So all I had to do was disable force feedback.  Will try v2.5 next to make sure but I am pretty sure that was the problem.  Now if I could only figure out where to get a hi-rez texture pask I'll be all set.

Hi, I've just stumbled upon your addon adding rumble and ffb awesomeness to Outrun C2C, so I've installed the game after it gather some heavy shelf dust and followed the instructions carefully, but two things...

The textures mod does not show in the config dropdown to install, just an empty dropdown and the sad part, even ticking the rumble and ffb in config, my Xbox 360 wired controller still does not rumble, not sure what I'm doing wrong? Running Windows 10 Home 64bit.

Howard, a question about force feedback management: in daytona usa when wheels loose grip the force feedback becomes loose, simulating that grip loose. This is absent in outrun 2006 (and model 2 to say the truth): is it something related to my settings (default) or the game itself?
(Thanks for all this!)

Not easy to describe for me Howard, but I will try again: in scud race when the car loose grip on the asphalt, the steer becomes loose (no counter force applied to the wheel). In race driving this happens when the car is "jumping" too, but that's a even better force feedback. In outrun 2006 FXT the wheel has always some torque applied, even when the wheels are not gripping the asphalt. Is this something configurable or the info is missing from the code?

Yeah I haven't added that.  If someone can link me to the calculation required I can probably add it as I have speed and the turning amount, but it isn't in the game's code, or at least I couldn't find it.

I have no idea where to get the calc you are asking for, sorry. For the "jumping" it should be "easy" (for a skilled guy like you, not for me) if a height variable is somewhere there.
Anyway, you have a new suggestion for your spare time being dude

Howard, is this only for Win7? Tried again last night reinstalling everything on Win10 but moment race starts I get subset out of range popup and then no control over the car. Normal exe is fine but then no ffb obviously on logitech ffb pro wheel.

2.5 was meant as a quick exe upgrade.  If you download 2.4 in the "Outrun 2 FXT 2.4 released!" it'll have the texture packs you need in fxtcfg/texpacks.

Can't remember if I thanked you back when 2.3 was released but cheers for such an awesome mod.

Have you ever looked into the networking side of the game? Playing lan mode with friends is a very poor experiance. Everyone teleports around so we have to play with collision off. Sometimes people just vanish altogether.
Is that just me? Are there genetic fixes for it? If not, Can anything be done via hacking to improve it?

Cheers!

Honestly this past year or so hasn't been spent on any of my projects.  Real life is over-whelming me right now and any free time I get I spend trying to de-stress and relax.  Coding can be fun, but trying to reverse engineer a defunct network server is decidedly terrible.

That being said I'm guessing I'll eventually take a serious look at it, but with recent developments on the emulation front it might be irrelevant by then.

i just downloaded the 2.4 & 2.5, managed to get most things to work except:

1.I can't get the bonus cars in Arcade mode. I'm using keyboard so i have disable the feedback, steering & rumble  to get it to work. Pressed every button i can after the last car but nothing.

2.I managed to change to alternate songs by pressing "Down" arrow there will have 2 sounds played (activate/deactivate) however i don't see any Overlay or indication, but i can hear the music change once i press tab (or was it f1/f2).

Also is it possible to have few rear view camera? the only one i found was the "Glamour Shot Front Of Car". maybe a 1st person and 3rd person rear view option? it's pretty useful in checking where your opponent is like Wangan Midnight Series.

This patch worked flawlessly until I updated the os to win7 now the horn is off and the rumble too, using the latest version 2.5.

i'm on Win7 no issues with 2.5. But i can never get the bonus cars in arcade.

The horn works but you must enable overlay and you need to register one of the dll.

Overlay is enabled, and register a dll how? Besides the force feedback is enabled and works perfect for another games, thanks :)

there is a DLL you need to register if you check the 2.4 thread it's the DLL inside the zip (if it wasn't in 2.5 check 2.4).

you also need to install the 2 font files inside the zip (check 2.4 & 2.5), right click select install.

FFB etc uncheck if you don't have a wheel.

This patch worked flawlessly until I updated the os to win7 now the horn is off and the rumble too, using the latest version 2.5.

alright it seems bonus car only works with Wheels on arcade mode.

After some testing with G25 i have come to a conclusion:

1.You can't assign H & Up/Down on the same gear shifter because even in G25's Sequential Mode the Gear Up/Down is same button as H-Shifter Mode Gear 1 & 2. you can however still use the paddle shifters (either via Gear Shift Config Button "9" Up & "8" Down) or check "Don't Block Original Up/Down Input" and assign the button in the Game Menu. This way you can shift using H-Shifter and also paddle shifter for sequential. I find Paddle Shift easier to use compared to original shifters.

2.H-Shifter is not useful in this game. I cannot start a drift by changing gear from 5-4-5 or 6-5-6 instead car just slows down and speeds up. however i can still use the paddle shifters to start the drift (5-4-5/6-5-6). So it seems in this game while the H-Shifters works it doesn't work in the same way as Down/Up. Maybe it's how the Down/Up Gear transition is being coded that using the H-Shifter misses out certain inputs (Example H Shifter 5-4-5 the game reads it as Gear 5, Gear 4, Gear 5, while the Down/Up input reads it as Down-Up and initiates drift mode.

3.Like someone pointed out the Brake Pedal needs to be assigned to RZ, and in the Logitech Profiler the Brake needs to be "Inverted". Gas Pedal has no need to be Inverted even though in the game menu controller config it reads as Inverted just ignore it it will work fine in race. In the Logitech Profiler click on "Brake" -> "axis Properties" and Check "Invert Axis Polarity". I've also created 2 Logitech profiles with same settings for "OR2006C2C" and "OR2FXT". OR2006C2C is the one you need to get the profiler settings to work while "OR2FXT" just to make it easy to launch the Game from Logitech Profiler. Sometimes the profiler doesn't notice the game launch from Shortcuts easy way to tell is if you have set your Degrees Of Rotation to 180-270 you can feel the lock during game launch.

4.For those having menu scrolling automatically Up/Down during the 1st run it's due to the steering configured as Gas Pedal to stop it from moving just hold the Gas Pedal down half way and use your keyboard to navigate into the controller settings and reassign the buttons.

5.The In Game Buttons are different from the ones you assign in the FXT Menu. "Button 1" in game is actually "0".

6.To fix no music sound in Arcade in FXT Menu Click Configure Enhancements & Uncheck "Enable Bonus Songs for Arcade Mode"

So Sorry I've been so busy that I have no time to reply since then, well I've  installed both fonts successfully, Again dont know how to register de DLL file and the horn and the FFB are still off, by the way I'm using a DS3 controller by MotioninJoy (offline interface), and again the force feedback works fine for another games.

Hello,

I am on windows 7 x64, i7-3770, gtx 1060 3g and 16g ram, using a Xbox one controller.

For me, I have to untick "Enable Overlay" to make "windowed" take effect, or the game will run in full screen mode anyway. And I have to untick "Enable Force Feedback" to make "Force Feedback" take effect (strange it may sound, but it is true for me), or else OR2FXT.exe will crash when "Outrun 2" title appears.

The title appearing is still "Outrun 2", not "Outrun 2 FXT".

Could someone give me any suggestion? :)

Did you ever find the answer to this?  I too just get a blank entry in the texture mod window, there are no texture packs in the installation (either 2.4 or 2.5) and I can't find them anywhere to download.  I can only see the French, German etc. packs in an earlier thread and I'm just looking to install the English language ones.

(Also, I'm assuming that these packs will replace the menu screens with something from the arcade and also hopefully upgrade the 2D graphics to HD - but maybe I've misunderstood that part).

--

Edit:  Actually, after some digging around I think I've found something.  2.4 and 2.5 don't seem to come with any actual texture packs.  However I downloaded 2.1b from an old forum thread I came across and that has the following files in the directory below:

\OR2FXT2.1b\FXTcfg\texpacks\mods

spr_SPRANI_CLAR_RANK_Exst.sz
spr_SPRANI_CONGRATS_CVT_Exst.sz
spr_SPRANI_ETC_CVT_Exst.sz
spr_SPRANI_GAME_CVT_Exst.sz
spr_SPRANI_SELECTOR_CVT_Exst.sz
spr_SPRANI_SUMO_FE_CVT_Exst.sz

Unfortunately I can't test these at work atm, but I'll try tonight and see if this does the trick.

2.1b can be downloaded from here for anyone who can try before:   https://www.mediafire.com/file/4qhywdhu74vctdb/OR2FXT2.1b.rar

--

Edit #2: Nope..  couldn't seem to get them working.  I put them under FXTcfg\texpacks\texmods but they still didn't show in FXTConfig.

That's on me.  Forgot that I changed the format between ver 2.2 and 2.4.

Here are all my texture mods, including some wip ones.  I'd suggest just sticking to the uncensored mod and maybe the 2sp loading screen.

YES!  I knew something was up but you've of course provided the right files Howard.

Unfortunately I now get "Run-time Error '75': Path/File access error" even though I'm running the config tool in Administrator mode.  I'm assuming I've got the files in the right folder too otherwise they wouldn't be showing in the config tool at all?

Ok before I go tracking down a bug that may not exist let's double check everything.

The fxtcfg.exe should be in the same folder as OR2006c2c.exe.  There should be a fxtcfg folder within that folder and the texpacks should be installed to fxtcfg\texpacks\texmods\
Once extracted each texpack should be in a folder and inside that folder should be the .sz files and a readme.txt.

This part is important... there should be a fxtcfg\texpacks\originals\ folder.  If it's not there it could throw an error as I'm not sure if I put in any error catching.

Please check all of that and let me know.

- FXTcfg.exe is in the same folder as OR2006c2c.exe
- There's a FXTCfg folder with the following directory:  C:\Users\Lee\Documents\Games\Outrun 2006 Coast To Coast\FXTcfg\texpacks\texmods
..where the seven folders you've posted have been placed
- Each folder has .sz files and a readme.txt
- There's also a fxtcfg\texpacks\originals\ folder and in there are two files:
..Sprite^spr_SPRANI_CLAR_RANK_Exst.sz
..Sprite^spr_SPRANI_SUMO_LOADING_Exst.sz

I'm also running the FXTcfg tool as admin.  Very happy to try and/or confirm anything else that might help you.

(And thanks, as ever, for all your hard work on behalf of myself and everyone else benefitting from all your hard work)

--

Edit:  This might help you debug though.  At least one of those two files mentioned at the end weren't there before I tried running the tool, I'm sure of it.

Yes, originals should be empty initially.... it's where the original files get backed up as they are swapped out for the modified ones.  That fact that some of the files copied over is strange.... it means that it errored out in the middle of the installation process.  An access error typically means that a file cannot be moved because it is locked or has some strange permission attached to it.

Which mod did you try to install and which files got copied over?

When I try to install Arcade Buttons & Uncensored Clarissa it creates:

Sprite^spr_SPRANI_CLAR_RANK_Exst.sz

..and when I try to install the Outrun 2SP loading screen it creates:

Sprite^spr_SPRANI_SUMO_LOADING_Exst.sz

..both in Outrun 2006 Coast To Coast\FXTcfg\texpacks\original.  I'm still running the config as admin, too.

Edit:  I've just tried this on a separate installation on a different PC and can confirm I receive the same error message.

You've tried to install multiple packs then because loading is from the loading screen mod.  Rank is the first file in the pack for the uncensored mod so it's able to find and backup the first file but it fails on the other functions.  Check your sprite folder.... are the files set to read only?  Try changing them and see if that helps.  Admin rights should give me write access anyway, but windows can be weird sometimes.

Hey Howard, yes that's right I tried to install multiple packs - both of those mentioned above.

However, yes - all files in the Sprite folder were set to Read Only.  I've just changed all of those, retried the installation of the Clarissa Uncensored mod and I received the Install Complete message!

It works!  Thank you!  I'm assuming most people's Sprite folder will be Read Only by default too, surely?

I like the new input icons, although uncensored Clarissa is a little bit..  well, I think I preferred her the censored way to be honest!  Each to their own I guess  :-[

Side note:

As I'm on a new installation I had to turn Wheel Override off straight away again otherwise my keyboard sent the menus and steering crazy!  Might be worth considering that being turned off, by default.  Others might not know to get that far and could miss out on your incredible work.

Dang... that means a service pack turned permissions back around the other way again and I have to put permission specific exceptions in there.  It's went back and forth a couple of times over the years, I wish they'd make up their mind over what is considered secure.

Ok I'll add it to the list.

Hi all. Many thanks to Howard for this great piece of work.  :applaud:

I've downloaded texmods.zip linked in this thread and other than arcade buttons and uncensored Clarissa I saw a folder named Deleted Hud which interested me in removal of the default one with included files. Where should they be put so that the new hud replaces the existing tacho/speedo cluster? If I just check the box in FXT config I get double HUD one on top of the other.

Or is it not implemented yet properly, but in test phase?

Ty.

I actually have a question on this Howard..  based on all the tools you've made available, would it be possible to edit the texture packs and create a version with the new buttons but the censored/more tasteful version of Clarissa?

And thanks as always for all your amazing work!

Yeah it can be done.  Just extract both versions of the texture, load them in photoshop and copy/paste the parts you don' t like.  I'm not going to do it though as my intention was to make the graphics as close to the Japanese original as possible (with English text of course).

Absolutely no need to explain that Howard - I already know exactly what you were going for and, on top of the incredible work you've already done, I'm hardly expecting you to create custom versions based on our personal preferences!! ;D

Howard my man, I've asked this before, so apologies for the repetition, but I can't recall which thread it was in now that you answered. If I want to upgrade my ageing version FXT 2.1 to the more recent version of 2.5, all I need to do is just overwrite the pre-existing files in my Outrun C2C with the newer ones, is that correct? I think you mentioned about uninstalling the texture packs first though?

Also, I don't know if this is an issue that's previously been mentioned or not, but I was playing around with some different custom course layouts using your course editor app the other day, and I found that putting certain combinations of the Sunny Beach Night and Palm Beach Dusk back-to-back in their normal and reversed variants would sometimes then totally ---fudgesicle--- up the graphics in the next stage. Initially the sky would just totally disappear in the preceding bunki (replaced by solid black) but about halfway through the stage, the road would start disappearing and all sorts of graphical artefacts would start filling the screen. If I plowed on through to the next bunki though, it would correct itself in the next stage. Anyway, apologies if this already a know issue, but I thought it was worth a mention if not. I haven't had the issue on any of the other stages, just the beach variants when they're linked.

I'm not 100% sure what the bad combination is though. In my first ever custom course I started with Sunny Beach Night, Palm Beach Dusk then Sunny Beach Night Reverse and then Palm Beach Dusk Reverse and there was no issue. The game didn't seem to like it (IIRC) when I tried doing Palm Beech Dusk Reverse, Sunny Beech Night Reverse, Sunny Beach Night then Palm Beach Dusk and a few variations like that.

Either that or my GPU's on it's way out...  :o

I haven't ran into that issue.... I'd have to see it in action.

As for the upgrading, yeah that should work fine, although you'll have to re-do your settings most likely.  You can uninstall the textures as a precaution, but it'll probably be ok.

Btw the reason I just stopped with the new version is that, quite frankly I'm running out of build time for my hardware projects and I'm focusing on them.  When  it gets cold I'm sure I'll do several releases of various projects.

Ha ha, no worries Howard, that wasn't a subtle dig or anything. Thanks for the reply. I'll see if I can get some video capture of the graphics going wrong between stages next time I get my wheel out.

well, if you really want to have fun changing textures, I think there could be some kind of patch, but surely it will have conflicts with Howard's patch, just 1 month ago it was playing with 2D elements to improve its aspect ratio 16:9

alone, finish the speed clock.
in order not to be stretched, it had to remain in these values

I've made a follow on video to the 'Which Version of Outrun 2 is the Best?', I uploaded earlier in the year detailing a few of the things that have changed in the time since, like Howard's Custom Course app, (plus a few additions I wanted to make to the Outrun 30th Anniversary video I made back in 2016)

The custom HUD I've been tinkering with should fix the aspect ratio stuff..... it's just a pain in the butt to work on.  The reason I haven't used the method you are using is that it reduces the horizontal resolution even further.  Eventually I'll get frustrated and just sit down and fix it.

Hi,

I am new with OR2FX. I have trouble with my Logitech Driving Force GT to set up the pedals. If I use FXConfig, I do not find the right set up ; if I try to configure within the game, I got a crash.
Any idea ?

Thanks,

Found a bug.

I'm playing in windowed mode but the proper resolution is not being correctly used. For example, if I use 1024x768, my screenshots are coming out as 1022x744. This causes massive tearing where rows and column of pixels would be missing. The easiest way to spot this is in the car selection screen where round wheel arches would tear and look a few lines of pixels are missing.

Also, the PC version is known to look inferior and "grainy" because of the lack of mipmapping where textures would have this ant crawling effect when in motion. Do you think integrating mipmapping is possible?

Damn Howard.....

There simply are no words to describe how much I'm enjoying this course editor. I am simply blown the ---fudgesicle--- away!!!!!  :dizzy:

I've just tested a couple of custom courses and everything's working great. No crashes so far. The course combination possibilities are just overwhelmingly endless!  :dizzy: You've really outdone yourself this time bro!  :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

On that note there are a couple of very small things I'd like to mention.

1)For some strange reason, Windows appears to be ignoring the fact that this game is a process that's running on its OS. Why do I say that? Because within Windows Power and Sleep settings, I have it set to turn off my monitor after 10 minutes if there's no activity going on. This obviously shouldn't activate when a game is running, but when playing OR2FXT it does. I was in the middle of the game and all of a sudden my screen went completely black! I was like WTF  :lol Then I moved my mouse and realized my system put my display to sleep. Is there any explanation for this and if possible a fix(other than obviously turning the sleep setting off)?

2)I'm not sure if it's related to FXT or just the game itself, but is anyone else getting frame drops on some parts of certain tracks? Ice Scape for example dropped my frames down to 30fps! This obviously shouldn't be the case on a system running an 8600K @ 5.2Ghz and a GeForce 2080Ti. Don't recall having any frame rate issues before on Windows 7 on my old GeForce cards(680, 980, etc). I wonder if these newer nvidia drivers are starting to become less optimized for this very old game?

I've had frame rate issues with the game too, but rather than the game slowing down, for a splitsecond or two the frame rate goes berserk and runs way too fast, normally resulting in me coming off the road. The game has done this to me for years, I think video capture seems to exacerbate the problem. I'm an NVIDIA card too BTW. I've also been caught out by my screen saver suddenly activating when playing FXT, mine's set for longer than 10 mins, so normally enough time to complete a 15 stage Marathon then I just try to remember to give my mouse a quick wiggle before I play again.

Ahh interesting. The power/screen saver issue is fairly negligible but the frame drops are annoying. 30fps in OR2 is unacceptable in 2020!  :banghead: I'm almost willing to bet it's nvidia's stupid drivers. I'm thinking of re-installing the steam version of the game to see if it's dropping frames as well.

I just played the steam version of c2c. Raced on the OR2SP Arcade mode continuous stage. Not a single frame drop. Smooth as butter. Weird.

Hey mate....what is your throttle setting in the FXT Config menu? Mine's at 33. I wonder if it's that throttle setting that's causing the frame drops? Is a higher number better or worse?

It's not a better or worse thing, what your system likes may vary.  The default setting of 33 means one loop every 33 milliseconds.  A higher number will increase the time between loops.... you should try that first.  Double it to 66 and then work your way back down.

The other thing to remember is I'm rendering a transparent overlay on top of the game.... because it isn't integrated into the game's render target that eats up more resources than you might think.

OK I have a dumb question so bare with me......

I know that the course editor is designed to work in arcade original  "OutRun2SP" mode of the game, but does it also work in "OutRun" mode? More specifically, can I apply my custom 15 stage continuous course to the one in "OutRun" mode? Or will they only work in the OR2SP arcade mode?

If you mean the 2006 coast to coast courses, yes you can edit them, but you can't change a branched course to a 15 stage or anything drastic like that.  Also all the challenges will be screwed up because it's the challenge for the original stage.... so it's best not to mess with those.

Hey Howard I have a favor to ask...at the beginning of this video...

....it shows a very cool custom OutRun 2 FXT logo at the intro. Can I ask how I do I get this logo to show up in the game when launching FXT? Also, can you please upload a picture of that logo somewhere so I can download it? I want to use it as a custom icon in my steam library.

Here's the video for now.... I'll have to find my source for the images.

https://www.mediafire.com/file/1wt4c8zxudyc4gs/FXTPOC.7z/file

Just replace the bik in your "mv" folder with this one.  I actually have quite a few from various iterations of outrun... pretty sure I posted them.

Hi,

I was enjoying Outrun 2 on my laptop with a Xbox One elite controller and the rumble worked like a charm this was on a Windows 10 laptop with an oldschool spinning hardisk. Then i upgraded my spinning disk to an SSD and installed a clean Windows 10 did a new install for Outrun 2 and copy the pasta the 2.5 in the folder. But now i cant seem to get rumble to work.

I tried a
-reinstall of Outrun 2
-An other version of FXT
-Tried diffrent configuration
-Updated the Xbox controller driver
-Run as admin both the configuration and the .exe

But i cant get it to work.

Can u check what i am doing wrong ?
See attachment for my configuration :)

Most likely windows has assigned the gamepad to an ID other than 1, it happens sometimes.... try the other three IDs.  Also make sure xinput is installed.

Thanks for your reply, i tried to change the input to the diffrent gamepads but no results.
I tried looking up how to check if xinput is installed or on my machine but cant find how to check this.
Could you explain this to me ? :)

Thanks

It should be included with windows, but if you've installed a stripped down build or an older OS or whatever it may not be.  Just download xinput 1_3 or xinput 1_4.... if you can't find an installer on the net you can copy the dlls directly.  Basically the point is you have to use official Microsoft xinput drivers... third party stuff like xbox360 ce or whatever won't necessarily work.  barring that I don't know what you've done or what you are missing.

Hello guys, i need some help. Everything works fine for me, except for One thing... I cant get the brake pedal to work correctly. It Is Just inverted... I think i have tried every setting possible. It brakes when It Is not pressed.....and viceversa. I have read that a dude some posts above suggested to invert the brake axis polarity in the logitech profiler... But there Is where i'm stuck. I have a logitech g29 on my cab and there isnt anymore that logitech profiler software. But Just the new ghub. And i think It Is not possibile to do that on the ghub  so, do you think there Is another way to get around this issue? Any advice is really aprreciated. Thanks in advance.

Don't mess with your Logitech Profiler. You have to calibrate the pedals in the game. The game's pedal calibration system is kinda funky, so when it asks you to press and hold down the pedal, do the opposite and leave it alone, then press "Enter".

While wheel override is necessary to play the game properly with a wheel, pedal override isn't.  I would turn it off, set the pedals up in-game and see if that helps.  Like he said though, the game is weird, you might have to play with it a little.

A question for Mr. Thunderwing (or anyone else playing Outrun 2 networked..)

I've seen your videos on YouTube:

And I'd like to know, is an Xbox setup still the best for networked play?  Or is one of the many wonderful things that Howard's FXT mod has been able to do is also improved the networked position?  Maybe not but his mod is so good that overall it's still the best experience?

(This probably justifies a new thread, but you could argue it relates to FXT 2.5 and I also want to keep this thread alive so Howard knows how much we value his work) ;)

Thanks in advance!

Network play on fxt is still iffy.  I'm concentrating on getting the new custom stages integrated and perhaps working on the force feedback a little more first.  Network play will probably be the last thing I attempt to fix as it's a pain in the butt having to manipulate multiple computers.

Got it and understood.  And just to remind you that I for one would be more than willing to sign up to a Patreon if it'd help you and I'm sure others would too.

(And to be clear that's completely irrespective of whatever you fix next, network play or otherwise).

Hello, I just caught wind of this mod and I am liking it so far but a couple of things I want to ask/point out:

1. How do I get the uncensored Clarissa graphics enabled? I am using the v2.5 Beta on the Dragon Kings link and I do not see it changed from the censored one after installing it.

2. Where is the arcade texture packs that was mentioned in the v2.4 thread? I do not see it anywhere and the config tool doesn't even lists texture packs at all in the v2.5 unless I am missing something.

3. I am not getting vibration feedback whatsoever using an Xbox One controller (Model 1708) using a generic Bluetooth dongle even though it lists as an XInput controller in most other games I play on my PC. Is there any possibility this could be looked into?

That said I am liking this mod so far, thank you for making this. I hope we can some day get an updated HD GUI mod to go with this to maybe remake the menus/HUD in higher resolutions.

Edit: I also noticed that Clarissa's character model is also censored in the OutRun 2 SP mode of Coast 2 Coast, whereas in the regular Coast 2 Coast modes she's not censored, so is there a way to de-censor her model too in OutRun 2 SP mode?

I did have a texture mod to de-censor the model somewhat, but it left a rather large hole in her torso that you could see in the endings, so I took it out.  Unfortunately the two models are animated differently, so swapping them out doesn't work.  If anyone can figure out the model format it might be fixable.  The texture packs are around here somewhere.... fxt is a mess atm and I'd like to do a release but my personal life is kind of imploding, so I never seem to find the time.

As much as some of us are fiendishly hungry for your latest work (you know who you are!) I'm sure I speak for all of us in saying that we'd never want it to be at the expense of your personal life or anything similar.

Are the files you mean included in these texture packs?

https://www.mediafire.com/file/l3rklbvtuuz8c0b/texmods.zip/file

If so (or of course even if not), point me to some specific files that make good samples and I'll start asking around.  I know a few ideas of places and people to try.  We're here to help.

Hello, I've recently gotten introduced to the Outrun 2 community and I have a load of respect for people who create mods to make this game even better than how it originally was. However, I have a problem I can't for the life of me figure out. In the regular version of Outrun 2006 when I plug in a Dualshock 4 with DS4 it works perfectly, but when I run Outrun 2 FXT, I can drive, brake, change gear, but I can't move the car. The analog stick works perfectly fine in the menus but it won't work when driving. If it wouldn't be a problem could someone help me out with this? Thanks! And sorry for the inconvenience.

You might have wheel override turned on.  You don't need that for a gamepad.

Hope everyone is safe and well in these very strange times!  For anyone who doesn't read EDGE magazine and/or isn't in the UK, here are some scans from a regular feature they run called "Collected Works."

They take a seminal developer and briefly walk down memory lane through some of their biggest titles, recollecting tales of their development.  The April 2020 issue featured none other than Yu Suzuki.

These particular scans focus on Hang On and Out Run - and the latter in particular certainly doesn't cover the kind of story I'd have expected him to tell about the game!

Hope someone finds them interesting :)

Hi

First off thank you for this amazing project =)

I have one problem the game runs far to fast even with setting Throttle to 100. Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this issue? The original exe runs just fine just the FXT runs far to fast.

TIA =)

Great work on this whole mod for a fantastic game. It all looks brilliant.

I haven't been able to get it working though so was wondering if it is still being supported and help given?

I have installed 2.5 and followed all the instructions but here are some of the issues i have.

1. There was no files in the drop down menu for the texture packs. Reading back i see that someone suggested installing 2.4 so i did this and the texture packs appeared. However, i dont see a difference in the game. It still all looks like the stock game so i dont know if its is installed or not.
2. When launching the game it stays in windowed mode. Then when ticking the full screen box and exiting, if i go back into settings it is unchecked again.
3. The music doesnt play during a race, only in the select music menu.
4. I am trying to use a wheel/pedals setup but the pedals dont work. After doing the config i can only set either the accel or brake as they seem to be on the same axis. Is there a way around this? Brake is pretty important in this game.
5. I downloaded the new intro video but have no idea where to put it. I did put it in with the other videos but it doesnt play. Just the original startup video.

If anyone can help with any of these issues i would appreciate it, thanks.

edit.
after a full re-install the game wont load at all now. Says issue with creating Direct3D device?
edit 2.
another re-install has got some new results.
1.copied the files from the 2.4 install to the 2.5 install.
2.now launches in full screen although curser is visible in bottom right of screen. box is still ticked to say it is windowed mode. Unticking makes no difference.
3.music is fine now.
4.went back into the in game settings and found the brake/accel option rather than the individual options that i was trying to set before. now works fine. although had to set the brake to another axis as there is no option to remove the assignment, only change it.
5.found the post that explains where to put this and is now working fine.

Im not convinced the correct .exe is loading when i select OR2FXT.exe.

Reading through the FXT Readme i see that it says if there are issues that it could be because of an improperly installed dx8vb.dll file.
How do i 'properly' install this file? I have it in the game folder.

When i run the game the de-bug menu is not selectable. The icon of the program running is the same as the original game icon rather than the OR2FXT.exe icon.

I have installed and re-installed the game 4 times. Nothing from the FXTConfig seems to do anything to the game.

So new info that might help someone figure out what is wrong.

When i start the game with my wheel not plugged in it starts FXT no problem. If i then plug in the wheel i cant use the wheel in game.
If i start the game with the wheel plugged in then FXT doesnt start and the original game starts.

Any help appreciated.

I'm not an expert here, as I couldn't get a wheel properly working myself either - but in terms of the smaller issues..

A) Have you tried running OR2FXT.exe in Administrator mode?  And also the FXTCONFIG.exe in Admin mode the first time?
B) Just to make sure, you definitely have installed the texture packs using FXTCONFIG, right?

Hope this sparks off something for other people who might know more, too!

Yes i ran everything in admin mode first. Ive tried to run without too, no difference.
I tried it in another pc and it seems to work so it must be a setting on the pc i originally installed on.

On the new pc though i dont have music in the game. I think ive read about this somewhere so i'll have a quick look through.
Seems like this isn't going to be supported so i'll pretty much muddle my way through and see what i can get to work. Dont know how long i'll try though. Seems like another project that people need in-depth pc knowledge just to get working. Shame.
Thanks for the reply.

Hello!

- First off, huge thanks to you Howard for your FXT mod, I've been using it for years now after I purchased the PC version for it (yes in that order;) and just upgraded seamlessly to 2.5.
Quick question: is it possible to use rumble for the xbox one controller as well? I only get your mod working with my 360 controller ànd unplugging the xbox one controller. Having it in crashes the mod, not the game btw.

- I don't know if this is the place to reply to Mr Thunderwing's deeply appreciated comparison videos (I've checked them all!) but I hope this kind of nitpicking might interest everyone in this thread.
After seeing the video and playing around with TeknoParrot's arcade version (with current fixes) myself I finally noticed another graphical difference that has felt quite substantial for me (apologies if this has been stated elsewhere): the difference in shadows underneath the car. The arcade version has one permanent black shadow besides the dynamic one, while C2C only has the dynamic shadow, often resulting in a `floating`effect of the car when the dynamic shadow only stretches out directly in front of the car. A small comparison: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ye64nf28g_cq4AqXSpGtIRQs5lIlEOTz?usp=sharing

This goes for traffic as well: the arcade version has both (albeit lower res) shadows popping in, while C2C only has the static shadow directly underneath the cars. In the comparison video I could tell Online Arcade had a seemingly lighter grade of static shadow underneath the car. Bloom effects also reflect off off traffic in the arcade version, while the effect is entirely missing in C2C. An a complete detail freak end: the tires seem more black and shiny, as well as having larger tyre threads in the arcade version.

On a sidenote, this video (even if i don't know its authenticity) sure has the blinding sun effects the emulated SPDX version has as well:

They sure seemed to have dumped a whole fat folder of post effects in the bin somewhere. Who knows someone might dig them up, the way the bloom and lens flare effects were found ><
Mr Thunderwing mentions in the video "the pc version had the exhaust burst effect when changing gears, where has it gone"? Could you elaborate on that? Was the effect previously present in the PC version of C2C? If so, might the FXT mod intervene with it?

Anyway thanks for the great stuff, i"ll play this game until i'm dead.
Oh and Howard if you ever could swap out Clarissa's outfit from Heart Attack to Outrun Mode I'd be grateful until I lose my eyesight. A very unlikely fix as I understand, since it's a different character model. But I wouldn't mind the hole in her stomach even <<

This is just a guess because I have no other explanation, but I believe that updated graphics drivers along with new versions of directx and windows in general, have broken some of the effects in the game.  Like he said, the tail pipe pops worked, now they don't and I don't have a clue why.  It isn't related to my mod as they no longer work in the stock version of the game either.  That could be what happened to the car shadow or it could be they didn't have time to implement it.

Something I've noticed on my brand new video card is that newer cards let you tweak the saturation and play with shader settings a bit and you can get things looking closer to the arcade that way.  I haven't had time to play with it yet.

I can do the model mod via breaking the texture that covers her up and while it looks fine in game  it looks terrible for the endings... it's not a small hole unfortunately.

Great discussion guys and good detective finding usernamedrop.

Howard I've been meaning to ask you....

Do you suppose it may be possible to hack and mod the arcade version of OutRun 2SP DX, and make a similar stage editor to the game when we play it in TeknoParrot?

I found out another interesting Outrun 2 fact recently, that I wasn't previously aware of, courtesy of YouTuber Noobsaibot21 (Isamu, you'll probably recognise that name, I think you two used to shoot the breeze over on the GameFAQs forum, many, many years back). He pointed out that the Ferrari Testarossa in the original arcade Chihiro version of Outrun 2 had a very different look to the one we ended up in Outrun 2 on the Xbox and all the subsequent home and arcade version of the game. He also mentioned that the only other place this Testrossa was seen was in the demo version of  Xbox Outrun 2, but only as a rival car. You can see the original Testarossa design here running in the Beta Chihiro version of Outrun 2 running in CXBXR:

I wonder why they ended up changing it? It'd be interesting if Howard, or anyone else for that matter, discovers this original design hidden away somewhere in the PC version of Coast 2 Coast's code.

Wow.....I never knew that. Very interesting indeed. I kinda like the look of that Ferrari from the original version. Be nice if Howard discovered the car buried somewhere deep in the OR2 PC files.

I think I can shed some light on that one although I can't confirm 100% if this is the case.  When Outrun 2 began production, they didn't have the Ferrari license so they created a look-alike car with just enough things changed, as they did on the original games.  Once they teamed up with Ferrari, the Ferrari team themselves created a brand new car based upon the Ferrari the old games were "inspired" by.  It was actually a big deal, bringing back a designer from the 80's or something, but it's been a few years since I last read the article and I'm not a car guy so it's already left my memory, sorry.  Of course this partnership actually lead to a lot of restrictions, like the cars couldn't be damaged, they couldn't do the classic "roll over and fall out" animation and most notably, Sega would have to continually renew the license to keep the game in circulation, which is why it's so hard to find now.  Imho they should have stuck with their own design and ran with it.

As for the models it definitely isn't in the pc version.  If it's in anything I'd say it might still be in the xbox retail version of Outrun 2.... lots of junk in there.

One of the great pleasures of working on this project is all the interesting behind the scenes stuff I've learned over the years.  I honestly think a vigilant person could write a decent sized book  about the Outrun 2 games.

That's really interesting. For a second I thought you meant the original 1986 Outrun had inspired the creation of an actual, real life Testarossa until my idiot brain realised that the production of the real life car stopped in 1996  :P

That's cool though that the Ferrari designers were inspired by the 1986 game and wanted to pay homage to it. The whole licensing thing is indeed a massive ball ache when it comes to digital only games that are suddenly no longer available (and the more restrictive elements you mentioned, Howard, like the not including the crash and flip), but I honestly think the game wouldn't be the same without the official Ferrari license, even if it doesn't affect gameplay and is a purely cosmetic addition. I dunno what it is, it just seems to me to give the game that little bit of extra prestige and legitimacy than having something like a load of made up Pher-rar-E's or something like that. Plus, I liked unlocking all those weird little Ferrari trinkets you got for completing the missions.

I'd love to see a book dedicated to Outrun 2. As well as all the stuff that's known, I bet S0L from Sumo's got some interesting behind the scenes stories. In fact, that's just reminded me that I stumbled across an interesting article awhile back about the development of the Xbox game. It's well worth a read.

Thanks for the fantastic reply's!
Tim Rogers from -mostly himself- https://www.patreon.com/actionbutton recently started a succesful patreon. Outrun 2 is one of his all time favorite games and included in the list of in-depth reviews he'll eventually do. He stated he'd do interviews with devs for his videos once the world opens up. Might be as close as we get to that book for now, i will give this thread a heads up once he makes that video and i should give him a heads up about this thread!

About the graphics:
I quickly looked for the oldest videos i could find of C2C PC on youtube and the tail pipe pops sure are present, though i could not discern any other shadows than the current dynamic one.
For tweaking bloom and colours https://reshade.me/ does the trick with in game sliders you can adjust to your liking.
Nvidia inspector has more detailed driver options. I have only used it for performance issues on other games, but it *might* be worth having a look at for finding those exhaust pops?
Nothing new for most probably, but i thought i'd mention it, some examples of the above right here (and a still of the tiny tyre thread as a bonus;) https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1aLwN7jFSKvZ6Ivx0YbFgqvuPZK9vJ4fQ?usp=sharing

Another fun effect i noticed at the start of the stage is the car shifting its weight from left to right after the burnout. Only visible because of the missing tyre smoke in the TeknoParrot emulation, but probably present in every version. Oh and is there a way to flash your direction indicators in C2C PC besides the fixed Horn?

Personally i'd still like to have access to the alternate Clarissa outfit in game, the pony and headband from Heart Attack look so much better to me than the straight hair in Outrun Mode (displaying the 00's height of fashion:/).
Is this still possible Howard or did you remove it entirely? I downloaded the texture pack reposted by you in this thread.

The Ferrari license sure means trouble and the dearly departed Online Arcade edition i wish i owned as its biggest victim, as well as any future release probably... But i must say the Ferrari brand adds infinite appeal and flair to the game for me - owner of a Ferrari F40... scale model as a kid - as well as turning the game into the most chill, least violent power fantasy in the industry. Whenever i show the game to anyone who doesn't game - lil kids or big adults alike - they see those gorgeous car models right before they see 'real Ferrari's' drift to insanity.

Heh you are a bit confused.  Those are different girls, not alternate fashions.  You race with one for outrun and another for heart attack.  There's even a third in 2006 challenges.  I still haven't found a reliable way to swap out passengers.  I did manage to change the drivers in 2006 mode but it was a bit buggy.  It's included in the mod.

Fantastic find; especially after all those comparison videos. ^^
I have the Xbox version with the audio cd underway as well.

About the Clarissa mod i should’ve been more clear: they are different character models with dito animations indeed but i wouldn’t mind having access to all kind of possible Frankenstein or costume swaps despite the glitches. ^^

Hello,

I am on Windows 10 and when I install FXT 2.5 in the game folder and after running the config exe in admin mode, The game won't launch and gives an error message about not being able to create Direct3D device.

Jt82 seems to have had the same problem but solved it by reinstalling the game and the tool, I tried re-installing everything several times but I still had the same error. Can anyone help me ?

Thanks.

You are probably using a high resolution then.  For whatever reason the game won't run in high res with all the bells and whistles turned on.  It's a bug in the game itself and I'm not sure why it does that with some video cards.

I am running in 1080p, not that high.

But I think I found the problem, I am playing on a laptop which has both an integrated Intel Graphics card and an Nvidia one. By default, the game was using the integrated graphics and wouldn't work with anti-aliasing for some reason. But after forcing it to use Nvidia from the Nvidia control panel, anti-aliasing works now.

Hiya,

Wonder if you can help. I've done everything in the readme and followed it to a T (ran fxtconfig as admin etc). The config menu comes up fine but then when I try to open OR2FXT.exe, nothing happens. I get a blue symbol come up in my sys tray (screenshot attached) but when I move my mouse over it, it disappears and nothing loads. Any ideas?

I'm new to this so I'm sorry if this is a beginner question, but I haven't found anything by searching. I recently got the Logitech G29 and H Shifter and have it working with Assetto, but I'm having trouble getting it to work with O2FXT. The mod itself seems to work fine, but controls are wrong - steering works, but the gears are in the wrong positions, and the accelerator doesn't work.

Does anyone have a G29 setup that they could show me the controls for? Alternatively, is there a tool that lets me know what axes correspond to which pedal and etc?

Thank you Howard for this wonderful mod which plays beautifully with my Driving Force GT and brings back a lot of great arcade memories!

Have you customised your control in the in-game menu? Using a Driving Force GT my pedals wouldn't work until I mapped them in game. If you're having issues with constant scrolling through the menu then re-map the 'Menu U/D' to something different (I read it defaults to the clutch which I don't have on this wheel).

Also in FXT config make sure you have:

  • Force Feedback - Enabled
  • Wheel Override - Enabled

Everything else can be off.

Another issue I had was with my 144hz monitor, the game clock is locked at 60fps so you'll have to limit your refresh rate.

I was having a search back through some of the racing threads as I was trying to remember which one contained those scans from Edge Magazine with the Yu Suzuki interview (this very thread funnily enough and they were uploaded by yourself) and I came across this question you asked me, that I never actually responded to. Only 9 months late, but better late than never...

For me, the Xbox link is far superior to the PC. The games stay synced properly and the position of your opponent on your screen always generally feels accurate. I’ve linked 2 original Xbox’s and a 360 before and this was still the case. The PC version will de-sync after a few stages, the LAN will still be in 2P mode, but each players timer will countdown differently, your opponent’s car will disappear and reappear in front and behind you, sometimes it’ll just totally disappear, effectively turning the LAN into 2 separate 1 player games. Because the timers are out of sync, one player might get a timeover, whilst the other gets to keep playing. I tried a 3 way PC link one time and all these issues were magnified tenfold.

On paper everything seems fine, but the pedals still don't work when I'm in-game; instead it acts like the throttle is being held fully down, and nothing I do to the clutch, brake or throttle has any effect. On the flipside, if I launch OR2006C2C.EXE instead, the pedals work but steering doesn't. Force feedback works fine, so it seems like the FXT stuff is at least partly working. If I toggle pedal override, it doesn't seem to do anything to change the situation. Here's my control setup:

Don't use pedal override.... it even says it's experimental.  Setup your pedals within outrun's menu then use wheel override in fxt if needed.

Okay, so I'm a dumb-dumb. I am trying to implement the FXT, and I can tell I'm doing it wrong. I'm trying to see if there's a video tutorial online, but no luck so far. I unzuip the rar, take the contents of the rar into the folder that has OutRun 2006. I have no clue what the fonts are and I don't know how to install it by right clicking. I ran FXTConfig as admin. When I try to run the game, the icons used are still for PC and I have trouble with changing the controls, (and I swear it has trouble what left and right is? I can't tell what's going on there). I apologize for my total ignorance.

This may be more suited to the hacking OutRun thread, so my apologies. This thread seems more active in recent months so I thought I'd enquire here.

So I've had FXT running for a few months now, and after a bit of fiddling, it's all pretty seemless now. Got AF injected through the NVIDIA Panel, fixed the bloom, got a nice ReShade preset that I'm still kinda tweaking to get things closer to PS3 OOR with the high contrast levels. My question is simply how complicated is the texture format for this game? Is extracting and editing the textures a fairly seemless process? Does the engine have limitations in terms of image resolution you can bring in? I'm weighing up whether I want to start planning a larger texture update for OR2 once I've squared away a few projects I'm working on currently, and whilst probably the PSP version would be the easiest to work with for me, I'd feel remiss if I didn't target the best version first.

It just uses regular dds files but that isn't the problem.  The problem is I never fully worked out the container format so any replaced textures have to be of identical size and texture format.  So you can alter textures but you can't up-res them.  If you could I would have already done it.  ;)

I'm not - those are my settings in the screengrab. Sorry if it was unclear, I was saying that whether I have pedal override on or off it gives the same issue.

I managed to arrange an online game of Outrun Online Arcade on the PS3 with someone over the weekend! First time I've played it online in probably 9 or 10 years.

Does anyone happen to have a Logitech DFGT profiler he'd be willing to upload? I swear I can't get that thing to work with Outrun. At best I got the pedals working but the car won't react to the wheel no matter what.

Edit: okay, finally figured out how to use the Logitech Profiler software. As you can tell, it's the first time I'm using a wheel... now, regarding OutRun, my problem is that either:
- The pedals inputs are simply not recognized even though they are well configured into the options,
- Or both pedals go to the maximum value, cancelling each other and rendering me unable to move forward.

I tried to tweak with the options which explains the different results, but none managed to satisfy me. Yet. Did anyone manage to make a Driving Force GT to work with FXT? I tried with the regular version of Outrun 2006 but got pretty much the same results…

Edit 2: wew, finally managed to fix it... hot damn, I wish some proper documentation came with that stupid wheel. Just in case anyone comes across the same issue with a logitech wheel: make a profile for OutRun, click onto the first pedal, select axis properties and tick "invert polarity". That ought to do it.

Guys does FTX work with the steam version or do you have to remove the drm? Also does anyone know if it is possible to change the ports the game uses for LAN? any .ini setting?

Hi All,

I have OutRun 2 FXT set up and working great on a Sega Racing cab. Thank you Howard. This should be popular with my friends when we are permitted to see people again  :-\

I have a couple of questions.

I have installed the arcade button mod which removes the keyboard button prompts. But I can see a different, newer style button section when I ALT-TAB the screen (I can also see it briefly when I quit the game. What option do I need to use to get it to show on top of the main game screen?

As it is an arcade monitor 31hz, I am running this at 640x480. Crt-emudriver resolutions installed.

When I run the game windowed I can see the newer looking view buttons, but running the game in windowed full screen as opposed to full screen messes up the graphics. It is hard to explain, but there are extra lines that aren't there when running non windowed.

Also, the intro screen has stayed as standard Outrun 2 (minus the Press Enter prompt) instead of the Outrun 2 FXT with the arcade start button image that I have seen in other posts. Is this a different mod? If so, does anyone know what it is please

Thanks.

Hey y'all, so this isn't specifically related to FXT, but this thread seemed as good as any to post this in. There's something a bit screwy going on with the frame rate in my version of Coast 2 Coast. It's been doing it for as long as I can remember, but it seems to be getting worse over time. There are instances in the game where suddenly for a couple of seconds, the game will suddenly feel like it's going waaaay too fast, making controlling the car and not crashing into things really difficult. Other times, the frame rate will, for a short period of time, seemingly get a bit chuggy, but yet the game will still feel too fast. It's weird...

I've previously tried turning V-Sync on in the NVIDIA control panel and setting the monitor refresh rate to 60HZ, but it hasn't made any difference. I can't see it being a performance issue, as the game ran without issue on my old single core Pentium 4 back in the day, so my i5 shouldn't be struggling...

Has anyone else had this issue and managed to fix it?

It's a known issue and I haven't been able to come up with a satisfactory solution.   Locking the refresh rate helps..... sometimes running the game in xp compatibility mode helps as well.  The slowdowns might be on my end.... when the game runs too fast fxt is getting data faster than it's used to and that can eat up resources normally used by the game.  In a perfect world this would regulate the games speed but in practice it can cause a glitch or two.   I've only got a few more goals with this project and then maybe I can move on to hacking another version of the game or perhaps something new.

Hi all,

Does anyone know if there is a way to force Outrun 2 FXT (and the transparent layer) to shut down fully by pressing Escape?

I have this in a driving cab, which also uses MAME, Model 2 and 3. This is now the only game I can't get to shut down with Escape.

I am using a frontend (Attract Mode). When setting Escape for all of the above, all work aside from Outrun 2. The main exe closes but the layer stays active (alt-tab shows this).

So I was wondering if anyone had any ideas how to force it to accept Escape. Or somehow send Alt-F4 when Escape is pressed for this game.

Thanks

I'm not sure how to get the program itself to do that, but... you could use a workaround in AutoHotKey. I have an awful lot of those set up for teknoparrot, and tend to use them for most games now.

I'm using this example for Sega Rally 3 - track set 3. So it renames a folder full of tracks for Sega Rally 3 to use, then it waits half a second, then it runs a bat file that is just teknoparrot with the SR3 profile (for other games it might run a different profile for my wheel and perhaps switch resolutions as well) then it waits (not exactly necessary because the only other thing in the script is a hotkey. After that, when i push the "x" key it shuts down the list of programs you can see. I think the only one that matters here is the rally.exe one, but you could list anything there.

Then the script runs SR3-close.bat, which i think might be empty but used to do something (and for other games might change the wheel profile back to deafult, and reset screen res for the frontend.)

Anyway, you could grab autohotkey, run the AU3_spy application to get the names or classes of the programs you want to shut down, and just setup esc:: as your hotkey.

Quote
FileMoveDir, C:\games\Sega Rally 3\Rally\main_release\tracks set 3, C:\games\Sega Rally 3\Rally\main_release\tracks, R

sleep 500

Run "C:\games\teknoparrot_1.41\SR3.bat"

winwaitactive, Rally.exe

~x::
send, esc
process, close, rally.exe
process, close, racing.exe
process, close, racing
process, close, parrotloader.exe

Run "C:\games\teknoparrot_1.41\SR3-close.bat"

sleep 2000

FileMoveDir, C:\games\Sega Rally 3\Rally\main_release\tracks, C:\games\Sega Rally 3\Rally\main_release\tracks set 3, R

sleep 2000

exitapp

return

If you are talking about an instant kill via escape no, that doesn't happen and intentionally so.   The load times in 2006 are outrageous so you don't want to accidentally kill the game when you are just trying to access the menu system.   I highly recommend leaving the game as-is where escape brings up the menu and you can select your choice from there.

I'm so glad to hear I'm not crazy. I've noticed this for years, but it's so subtle that I thought I was imagining things.

Very frustrating. Never noticed this issue on any non-PC versions of C2C.

Hi Howard, thanks for the response. The reason I want this is because I have this installed in a Sega racing cab. All of the games on it quit via an additional quit button assigned to Escape that I have added outside the cab (along with a coin button for those games that need it).

I would rather users not have access to the menus. It works great how I have it set up now

Hi all,

I wondered if anyone has successfully got Outrun 2 FXT to work with an APAC to allow gear drifting in manual?

I have all controls working using wheel over ride with the wheel on P1 side of APAC and pedals on P2 side but when selecting manual I can't get it to drift when down shifting.

I know the PC version allows this as I can do it with a keyboard but I haven't found the right combination to get it to work using the driving control pots.

If anyone could post how they have their controls/wiring set up that would be great.

Cheers

I might be teaching you how to suck eggs here, but you do understand that you need to immediately shift back up after you've shifted down to get the gear drift working? Also, you need to be going at least a minimum of 150mph or over for the gear drift to work. If you try it any slower than that it won't work, you'll just change down and up gears and then usually crash into a wall (unless you drop down 2 gears and back up by just one, which let's you do the drift at a slower speed). If you've got a device you can successfully change up and down gears with, you should be able to pull off a gear drift.

Cheers for the reply, Mr Thunderwing. It was me that commented on your YouTube video with the same issue.

I feel like I have tried every type combination using the base game and the FXT configs. If I use keyboard, gear drifting works straight away. But if I use the APAC it doesn't. At least in my case.

I am certain it is because my pedals are on a different side to my steering and gears. But I haven't found the right combination yet. It isn't possible to have 3 pots on one side of the APAC.

I also messaged Andy at Ultimarc to see if the APAC being displayed in Windows as 2 joysticks could be disabled but it can't. He did say U-HID should do it though.

I have managed to get it to work when using a key to accelerate, then using my wheel and gears (a bit awkward to test :) ) . I have also tried increasing the polling speed of the USB just in case that was the issue.

I am hopeful that I will work it out eventually. As everything else works. Brake drifting etc plus all the other controls. There is just something that is stopping gear shifting from working.

I was hoping someone had managed to do it before via APAC so I could copy their config

Cheers

I'm confused, your using an analog shifter?

Everything is wired through the APAC.

So, steering pot (analog) and gears (digital) are on player 1 side of APAC. The pedals (analog) and the VR buttons (digital) are on the other side.

I have got all controls to work but gear drifting doesn't work. I am lost as to why. That is why I was hoping someone had a config I could copy, maybe

So, you mentioned that all your controls are otherwise working normally, so I'm assuming you can shift up and down gears in manual? So, when you say the gear drift doesn't work, what actually happens when you steer into a corner and quickly shift down and up?

It drops down a gear and just slows down. It is bizarre because if I use the default keyboard settings it works every time. I think it is because the gears are wired on the opposite side to the pedals on the APAC.

I have tried all different kind of options with the FXT mod but haven't found the right one yet.

Looking at this thread and I think most people are using a G27. I was hoping someone had success using an APAC.

So are you saying when you try to shift back up, it doesn't and you just stay in the lower gear which is why you're slowing down? What type of physical device are you actually changing gears with? A gear stick? pedal shifters? Buttons on the wheel?

It shifts back whenever I want to. It doesn't seem to matter what car, the amount of dropped gears or how long (or short) I leave it between shifts it won't gear slide. The reduction in speed is due to the lowered gear, the brake isn't being used.

Like I  mentioned earlier, with the keyboard I can get gear drifting to work every time just not with a shifter (seen as a joystick in game and Windows via APAC)

The shifter is a digital sequential mech.

I just can't figure out why, if everything is working as it should, then why should this part of the game mechanics not?

I'm at a complete loss as to why this won't work for you. The only last ditched attempt at a workaround I could suggest, is maybe if you keep the gears assigned to keys and then use something like Joy-2-key to assign those keys to whatever buttons your wheels shifters get assigned to and seeing if that helps.

It's entirely possible that it has something to do with the way I hacked the gears.   You've got to remember that they are supposed to be sequential but I hacked the code so an h-shifter can be used as well.   I can confirm that keys are handled differently than buttons so yeah, you might want to try joy 2 key and see if that helps.   I'm sorry to say that I work on the game so much I rarely get a chance to actually play it for extended periods...... I mostly just goof off without worrying about time when I play it.

Thanks for the advice, chaps. Also, no need to apologize, Howard. If it wasn't for your efforts this game wouldn't be in my cab at all.

Cheers

EDIT: It Works!!!!!!

I used a combination of joy2key and rocketlauncher to launch the game through AttractMode with the gear override on FXT turned off.

Thanks Howard for this mod and thank you everyone for your help.

Well, i finally got FFB wheels, and wanted to thank you, Howard, for the FFB mod :) And to confirm that changing to the keys works better for drifting, but it's still not great. It's like there's something the game's original up/down gearshift keys are doing that your inputs are not. That's just a feeling though.

I also have a questions about FXT's configurable LAN mode - i realise it's experimental but I can't get it to do very much. The box won't even stay ticked in the GUI :)

Well it doesn't do much.   Right now it, in theory will take you into the lobby and set all the settings you configured.... in practice, not so much.

MrThunderwing, I'd like to ask you a question about drifting in different versions of OR2.

The drifting in Outrun 2 is amazing, obviously. It's what makes the game as good as it is, to my mind. But is the drifting the same in each version? (Not counting the FXT mod, where substituting the gearshift inputs makes it hard to trigger a drift with them.) Someone on one of the other channels I visit makes the claim that the original Chihiro OR2 and the Xbox release of it, have better drifting physics - as in, it feels even nicer. And that every version since (SP, C2C, Online Arcade) has changed things for the worse, if only slightly.

As the individual here with the most experience, i was hoping for your input on the subject.

Don't use pedal override.... it even says it's experimental.  Setup your pedals within outrun's menu then use wheel override in fxt if needed.

I'm not - those are my settings in the screengrab. Sorry if it was unclear, I was saying that whether I have pedal override on or off it gives the same issue.
I just signed up because I noticed you had the same issue I had. The G29 uses Logitech's "G HUB" instead of the old software and to my knowledge there isn't an option to invert pedals, which is why throttle/brake are that way. I'd like to know if anyone else here has gotten a G29 working with it.

Welcome to the forum :)

If the pedals are separate Accel/Brake you shouldn't need to invert them, the game can handle that. You go in game to the options, then controls, then to the pedal. When it says Min Brake or whatever, just wait a moment until the full meter drops to zero, i think? Or if not, after ten seconds or whatever just leave at min brake position and hit enter. Then hold max, hit enter. If min is above max, the game knows the pedals need to be inverted.

One bug i had in steering is that when you don't turn the wheel right to the edge, if you go in game and turn to the edge it will invert - so wheel hard left flips over and makes you turn right. I'm not sure if the pedals do that as well, but i don't think so.

I just signed up because I noticed you had the same issue I had. The G29 uses Logitech's "G HUB" instead of the old software and to my knowledge there isn't an option to invert pedals, which is why throttle/brake are that way. I'd like to know if anyone else here has gotten a G29 working with it.

I did that but it only made the pedal go to max and waiting didn't drop it back down. I attached a screenshot of what it looks like, it never changes.

For me it might have sat high, i can't remember. But then it moved down when i pushed the pedal. It appeared to be going the wrong way, of course, but the game can handle that.

So, for you, it always sits high when the pedal is at rest? Then, after waiting a bit, when you push the pedal all the way down it still sits high? And you're definitely not using a combined axis?

You might look into controls mapping with something like UCR, if you really get stuck. Not ideal, but it should work.

Yo! I don't know if I'd use the term 'better' but I think there is a definite subtle difference between the handling of the original OR2 on the OG Xbox and the subsequent offshoot versions of the game. I think there seems to be a more noticeable difficulty gradient in the way the easy, intermediate and hard level cars handle in the OG Xbox game (and I'm assuming the Chihiro version by extension - It's been about 15+ years since I played an actual OR2 cab and I don't think the beta Chihiro version I've played in CXBXR Reloaded really counts, as the association of difficulty with each car is different to the finished game).

Ages ago I was obtaining some footage from the OG Xbox OR2 for a video, and I jumped straight in with the F40 (i.e a hard level car) and manual transmission and coming off the back of the PC game I noticed it was more of a struggle to keep the car on the track and not crash. Playing Coast to Coast on the OG Xbox, that gradient seems (to me at any rate) to still be there to a certain extent, but for some reason the handling felt a lot more forgiving in the PC version when using a pad. No idea why that would be the case. TBH though, I can't really tell any difference now between the PC version, OR2 SPDX in Teknoparrot and OOA on the PS3.

One thing though that definitely makes the original OR2 harder than it's younger siblings is the fact that you get penalised far more severely for collisions with other cars. If you drift into another car in OR2 you fly up into the air and lose an absolute ton of speed. In Coast 2 Coast, SPDX and OOA (and I think the original Chihiro version of OR2 SP) you just plough through the other vehicles (possibly not CPU rivals though, can't recall...) with a far less greater loss of speed.

Yeah, it always sits high and when I push it down it's still sitting at high afterward. No combined axis. Do you have a G29 as well?

Do you have a G29 as well?

Admittedly not. I'm using a G25, which, while having inverted pedal axes and perhaps being somewhat similar, does work in OR2.

My next suggestion would be UCR running to a virtual joystick like either X360ce (vigem) or Vjoy. Basically, you set up the virtual joystick as stick #1 on windows (which is a bit of a crapshoot itself, admittedly) and then map the axes from your G29 to where you want them to go (inverting if desired) on the virtual joystick. Given OR2 lets you then pick the joystick you want to set up, you can then just use the wheel itself to map the inputs, no need for the vjoy feeder or whatever.

The above has worked for me both with a non-FFB wheel, and the G25. I'm hoping it would work for you as well, if needed. Unless it's a problem with the logitech software itself, mb.

Interesting, thank you for the information :) Pls keep us all updated on progress to the status of OR2 ChihiroBeta in CXBXR Reloaded going forward too, i've been watching your videos with interest :) Why is it only the beta that's running? That's what the devs are coding towards, at present? Obviously the Chihiro dumps are available. It would be great to be able to play WMMT1/2 as well, of course.

Yeah I was going to chime in on that one.   To summate for everyone yes, the drift mechanic is different but it was improved to make the game easier.   Some people complain that the drifting is too easy in 2sp/2006 but I always thought that was kind of the point.   The original outrun rewarded good driving and drifting wasn't even a thing... drifting is supposed to be a tool at your disposal to navigate the course and improve times, not a challenge.

As for the pedal thing... pedals are weird in outrun 2006   I forget the process to properly clear a setting before binding it, which may be your problem.   It's in that million page "hacking outrun 2006" thread if you feel like searching for a needle.

I'm not really sure what the deal is with only the beta version being available. I know most of the other Chihiro games have some kind of JVS control board error when they load up, so perhaps it's related to that? I don't think the CXBXR developer is specifically working on the Chihiro games, but Outrun 2 seems to be benefiting from whatever he's doing. The beta Chihiro game runs more smoothly than the actual Xbox game on CXBXR. This seems like a good opportunity for a little video plug to show how good the progress is at the moment....

Hello,

After purchasing a C2C PC DVD  years ago & discovering FXT I’ve been intrigued by the O2 version differences. I’m having an issue with the UI of the game in the Teknoparrot emulator where a fine line above ‘REV’ is visible at all times as well as some lines in the splash screens. I’ve recently switched pc’s, did a clean install with a different rom & yet there it is: lines. Didn’t see them anywhere in Thunderwing’s videos or anywhere else. I’ve posed the question on specific forms to no avail so I try posting it here. I would also like to know of there’s any update on the missing smoke from the tires at the start in the TP version, or likewise any updates on the UI scaling/upres in C2C (as well as the posibilities of adding in missing visual effects such as the exhaust flames) can be expected at all.  Thanks for the great work on the game!

I'll have a look and see if i can see the line, i guess. It's probably some sort of emulation or upscaling artifact - the original game runs at 480p, after all. Is it there at every resolution you've tried?

I've never seen the line either I'm afraid. I'm not sure if there's been any update to the missing smoke from the tires. I've been running SPDX in an old version of Teknoparrot, before TP started auto updating. I should really get around to getting it set-up in my auto-updating version of TP at some point, but I'm just too lazy to be arsed at the moment...

I had the line in 1440p as well on my previous pc, and i do now in 4K on a brand new build with either version of the game i have so i’m clueless. I’m using all the known fixes. I use the updated TP version but no idea if that includes updates for specific games, the smoke is still missing on my end as well ><.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is a fantastic video bro, and the information that you provide in the description is quite fascinating! I had no idea the original arcade chihiro version of OR2 was playable in CXBXR.

I have a question.....does CXBXR supports true full force feedback and FFB wheels? I know the original version of OR2 has full FFB, so I was wondering if the emu supports it? If so, how good are the FFB effects in the original chihiro version compared to say, OR2SP DX for linbergh?

When emulation improves and progress is to the point where it's near perfect, I definitely plan on playing the original arcade version of OR2, as I have never played it except for one time a long time ago at a movie theater. It was so short and so long ago I don't remember hardly anything about it LOL.

Loving FXT and trying desperately to get it working well!

Running a Logitech G920 wheel on Windows 10. Everything is fine, except a FFB effect seems to lock on during the game. For example, the rumbling when you cross the cobbles gets stuck and it does that forever. The only way to get it tio stop is to exit Outrun. This problem happens nearly every time I play it.

Any thoughts all? Cheers!

Ah, I've just stumbled across this thread after firing it up for the first time since I got my logitech DF shifter. I too cant get it to manual drift so it would seem to confirm its not just the ultimarc gear the other poster had.
Shame but its fine, the game never had an H shifter anyway even in the arcade. I can stick to the paddles and sequential shift instead. :) I do wonder if it'd be possible to intercept the gear changes and use a sequential shift if its only 1 different? Maybe one for the backlog and a rainy day :D

Ah, I've also hit the pedal override issue where it also fails to start a drift some of the time. That's more of a game changer as mine are the x and y axis of a joystick fed via an arduino. Are there other 3rd party solutions I could use to get around that?

Oh all good. I used joystick gremlin and vjoy to combine the pedals and wheel into a single device.
Does anyone know why the cursor in the menus keeps cycling up all the time? Makes it a right pain to change anything.

What did combining achieve, sorry?

Cursor issue in the menus is because windows is seeing one of your two pedal axes as the Joy1 y-axis. And it's at one end at rest (up) and the game reads that as default menu controls.

Just realised I never replied to this, soz. I've no idea about the status of FFB in CXBXR I'm afraid, I only ever play it with an Xbox 360 pad, which, off the top of my head, I don't think even has any rumble effects or anything in the game. Did any OG Xbox wheels even support FFB? As the OR2 game that's playable in CXBXR is only a beta version, it's entirely possible it hasn't got any FFB type effects at all.

Combining means I don't need to use the pedal override as my pedals and wheels are seperate devices. Which is good because pedal override breaks the ability to start brake drifts correctly

For the menus, sounds like I can just remap to different axis and that should go away then

OK. I thought I had this working. However I had disabled wheel override. Now when I re-enable it the menus/game just drive left. I've tried changing the joystick Id from 1-5 with no luck. I also disabled vjoy and joystick gremlin and still cant get it to work. This was fine yesterday so I'm not sure why it's now misbehaving.
Is there a way to see what joystick Id a device has?

OK. All sorted. Fxt doesn't like trying to do ffb to a non ffb device and I was only changing the wheel assignment. Once I changed them both to the right I'd it stopped crashing and all started working again.

Would defo be easier if we could get some kind of Id to device name pairing tho.

Cheers

I'd be interested in hearing any news regarding the full released arcade original OR2 game working on CXBXR so if you hear anything on that front please keep me posted. I know for sure the arcade cab has FFB and from my(limited) recollection it's very good! So to be able to see that emulated with full on ffb wheel support would be a dream!! Cheers

I got everything working on this today. It came about because I bought a new wheel, the logitech G29, to use with PSVR racing games, and then I said "well what about outrun?"

I had to do more fussing with the wheel than I did with the game to get it working. Once I got Logitech's G Hub software, I was able to fully use all of the buttons, and OutRun started seeing it correctly.

The mod feels great! I can't believe how much it brings me back to those glory days of playing on one of the 4-player SDX machines. I'm still fiddling a bit with wheel settings to get it right, but generally it seems that maximizing sensitivity and setting the wheel rotation limit to 270 degrees is what really made it feel arcade- accurate.

Also, I have a follow-up question; Where are the texture mod packs to be found? I've been searching online, but I can't find any packs. I'm just looking for the "arcade accurate" pack promised in the FXT mod, but I can't find the files anywhere. Could anybody help me out with that?

Also, maybe it's just my memory, but the humans at the ending look really washed out, and have low-detail models, vs. my recollection of playing a 2006 cabinet a few months ago. I should boot it up on Xbox to make sure, but figured I would ask if anyone else had noticed this.

And, before I forget, is it possible to rebind controls so that pedal and brake confirm/cancel, as opposed to gear up/down? That's something else that has always bothered me with the PC release, figured I would ask.

Anyway, thanks again Howard for all your amazing hard work! Having this game back after moving away from the arcades I used to play it at has really brought back a great source of joy. Your work is much appreciated.

Hi there. It's good to hear you have had some luck with the G29!

May I just ask if you are able to play several games in a row with the FFB still working ok? On the G920 it sticks/stops during the first game.

Thanks!

Hey all;

I just installed Outrun 2 FXT as I was playing this old classic again, and it ran fine before hand but now I've run into problems... and this thread seems to be the closest to having the answers, so here I am!

Firstly, the game is now running far, FAR too fast. I believe the issue is it needs to be locked via VSync or manually to 60hz, but it's taking the screen refresh of my monitor/desktop which runs at 144hz.  I can't find anywhere in game, in the old or FXT installers where I can force it to run at the lower speed, nor can I see anywhere in the actual files (so far) where it's saving the settings to manually edit it.

Secondly, it's not taking my 360-esque gamepad controls again; I have a vague memory this was hellishly fiddly when I first set it up, and suspect it was manually edited in but I likewise can't see where. In particular, the in game mapping is not reading the left hand stick as the left/right controls in game (although it allows me to set them as an axis), as well as thinking the left and right triggers are all a single Z axis, which I want as brake and accelerate (and not letting me set these as seperate buttons).  The FXT set up does seem to have some controls, but doesn't allow me to remap these. Any ideas where these are hiding?

Edit: After much fiddling, I think the settings for controls and video are hidden in one of the files in the SaveGame folder, probably Common.dat, as that was the only consistent file between all the various reinstalls etc I was testing.

The problem with ignoring the left/right input was solved by unchecking "Wheel Override" under FXTConfig > Configure Controls, presumably because it locks in wheel control at the expense of the input from the gamepad.

I'm still stuck trying to force VSync / 60 or lower hz through the game only though!

There's probably a right way to do it, but... a program like RTSS will help throttle the game to 60Hz. Or any other game, to any desired limit.

I was able to externally limit it via the Nvida Control Panel from my GPU's drivers; it's under NCP > Manage 3d Settings > Program Settings and under the "Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast (or2006c2c.exe)" options (NOT the FXT2.5 exe) then setting "Max Frame Rate" to 60 and toggling Vertical Sync to On.

I am not sure if this is how I tackled it under the old install, as the program was already there, but it works, and on my first try I was able to get AAA rankings on two bloody hard courses for the first time, so I'm claiming it was the prior frame rate not me that sucked, he he...

I was able to finally get the controls to stick, after getting also hit with the constantly moving menu bug; the issue seems to be the Menu Up/Down input, which was reading input from elsewhere and then being incredibly oversensitive. Recalibrating the gamepad, then try, try, trying again to remap the menu input finally allowed me to get a clean config. I'm still not sure where it's manually saving the actual input, so people can get at them and manually reconfigure (and none of the hacks or mods seem to tackle it either, so perhaps they don't) but my guess is still it's somewhere in the SavedGame folder, as copying that between clean installs replicates the broken controls for both FXT and the default client.

Hey guys, new member here  8)

Congrats to howard for the amazing work on this mod, I especially like the course editor and rumble effects. Also, if anyone's interested, I've found the reason why the backfire graphics "disappear" on PC, and it's a bug linked to the controls. I've posted a detailed explanation in the general OR2006 hacking thread.

Well, not everyone is on Nvidia, and only newer drivers have the feature anyway. There are several other ways to skin that cat, however. Like RTSS or SpecialK.

So Mr Thunderwing, where is OR2 Chihiro emu up to now? Can i presume on you to do another test? When it's fully working maybe we can persuade Boom to do the FFB for it!

Yo! I haven't checked in for a couple of weeks, so that question was timed well...

I just fairly recently looked into what's occurring with the Chihiro game at the moment to see if anything'd changed and made a few videos. In CXBXR, it doesn't seem like it's any different: Looking pretty good and running at a decent speed on my elderly PC, but the shadow under the car's still all messed up. One thing that did seem different though, is that it looks like the graphical benefits you got from adding some additional DXVK dll files to the folder with the EXE in are now part of the standalone build.

There's another OG Xbox emulator out there called Xemu, which I'd previously heard of, but hadn't really looked into, which is able to emulate an OG Xbox that's been modded with the extra RAM needed to run the Chihiro stuff. It doesn't have the graphical bugs of CXBXR and looks pretty much perfect but unfortunately it only runs at about 10-15fps on my 10 year old PC. I was also having the (apparently common) issue of the track abruptly ending at the end of the first stage and not being able to progress any further, despite the fact I created a patched ISO version of the game which is supposed to prevent this... I think it might be connected with the performance.

This isn't Outrun related at all, but, ehhh, if I'm shamelessly plugging a load of videos I made I might as well go the whole hog and I think this will be of interest to any arcade racing fans on here:

I'd also like to try OR2 on Xemu, but buggered if i can even figure out where to get started after downloading it. Any chance i can sweet-talk you into writing up a guide? :)

Hi mate, it's not super user friendly, but I got it working without too much trouble by using the information from the official Xemu site here and also managing to pick out the salient bits of info needed specific to the Chihiro stuff from a thread about Xemu over at the non-English speaking forum we're both members off.

It's a bit odd though, initially I thought I had it correctly setup but it wasn't working. I closed everything down and then next time I opened it up, suddenly it was, so not sure what the magic factor that suddenly fixed it was. I'll try and remember what I did. The Xemu main site explains the basics:

"In order to actually run xemu, you must have a copy of the stuff that a real Xbox needs when it turns on:

MCPX Boot ROM Image
Flash ROM Image (BIOS)
Hard Disk Image"

They do provide a pre-built 8G Xbox HDD image, free of any copyrighted content, and only containing a dummy dashboard.

Download Pre-formatted Xbox Hard Disk Image

The rest you need to find on your own though.

I'll add a screenshot here of my Xemu System Configuration so you can see what what BIOS and MCPX boot ROM I'm using. The particular BIOS I'm using is (from what I recall) the important part when it comes to getting Chihiro games emulated as if they're running on a 128MB RAM modded Xbox.

I didn't need to doing anything about the EEPROM. I thiiiiink that's what the OG Xbox uses for it's game saves, so i think it's self generating...?

Unlike CXBXR that uses XBE files, XEMU needs ISOs of the games to run. I used a program called C-XBOX to create the outrun2.iso file from my existing Outrun 2 Chihiro XBE, which I also patched first using it (not sure what the patch does, but apparently, it's a necessary step). C-Xbox tool is pretty self-explanatory once you fire it up. you'll need to edit and rename your outrun2.xbe to Default.xbe first, before the program will recognise it.

Anyway, hope that helps.

I mentioned it once in Howard's other 'Hacking Outrun 2006' thread, when I very first noticed it and mentioned it again in an Outrun 2 comparison video I made (as it was relevant to the comparisons when comparing the visuals in the different versions)... Not really a 'big fuss' is it? Let's not blow things out of proportion, eh?

It was meant to get an answer since most of this board is either abandoned or in ignore mode.
Anyway, it's sad to see this great mod left as it is, too bad it never reached its full potential  :(

Nope, I posted a workaround for the flames bug in the "Hacking OutRun 2006" thread then posted here but nobody cared. So I tried a little bit of soft trolling to gain attention and -guess what- I got it. It's sad but also enlightening at the same time

It was meant to get an answer since most of this board is either abandoned or in ignore mode.
Anyway, it's sad to see this great mod left as it is, too bad it never reached its full potential  :(

I'm sorry, you came in here to bait ppl? Really?

Nope, I posted a workaround for the flames bug in the "Hacking OutRun 2006" thread then posted here but nobody cared. So I tried a little bit of soft trolling to gain attention and -guess what- I got it. It's sad but also enlightening at the same time

Mate, if you wanted to get my attention to discuss some Outrun 2 with you, all you needed to do was ask, there's better ways to go about it than leaving a purposely antagonistic comment (soft trolling?) that's just going to make me think you're a bit of a dickhat. As it is, yeah, that's great that you've found a work around for the flames bug. Nice work, genuinely. It's great that people are still interested enough in this game to discover stuff like this.

As for Howard's mod never reaching it's full potential and people ignoring these threads... The original Hacking Outrun 2006 thread is almost 10 years old now and the FXT one is 5. I mean, it's not really surprising people in the forum have moved on to other things now and it's just a couple of hardcore Outrun fanboys like myself, buttersoft and Isamu that periodically check in and engage with them (and even then, I normally only swing by here every couple of weeks or so). And, as far as I can see, Howard's mod, in all it's years starting as the hack 10 years ago and morphing into FXT has achieved everything it set out to. The main thing was getting gaming wheels working properly with the PC game's 'Joypad only' unoptimised controls and sorting out the huge deadzone. The FFB was an added bonus. The fact he was then able to go on and create the awesome course editor (complete with an initiative and user friendly UI) was just the icing on the cake. Sometimes man, you've just got to be content with what you've already got

Just for the record, fxt isn't dead, it's just on hiatus.   My new job demands more of my time and more importantly my mental energy.   I'm just too tired these days to keep up at the break-neck pace I used to.  I don't comment much these days unless I feel like I can help or I have something significant to add but I don't ignore the forums or any of these threads.  That being said I've probably got one more big, feature rich, update to fxt in me and any necessary bug fixes.   I figure I'll become more active this winter once I'll be snowed in but no promises.

Outrun 2 in Tekonparrot is flawless. Without sounding like a dickhat, what does this version have that the original arcade doesn't? I've never used this version, period.

My twin racer gets played every week by young and old, outrun and Daytona are still the preferred racers and that is a real compliment considering I've got over 50 linked arcade racers running.

Cheers

The non-Howard-fied vanilla version of Coast 2 Coast has 5 extra cars than SPDX, a fair bit of extra music and all the mission modes. It probably doesn't look quite as nice as SPDX does though when it's fully res'd up (the bloom's better in SPDX and all the HUD stuff like the speedometer's in the correct aspect ratio. It gets stretched in Coast 2 Coast when you play in 16:9). Coast 2 Coast is also missing some of the end goal animations, like the shuttle launching and the volcano erupting).

The big draw with the mods Howard's added (apart from sorting the controls out) is the course editor, that lets you create your own custom courses (including the Sunny Beach night and Palm Beach dusk ones you can only normally use in Time Attack). You can mix and match any combination of the OG OR2 and SP's stages together in normal or reverse. It's pretty amazing really. Here:

Yeah, but he needs to download it separately. Plus there's still a couple bugs like CPU Rivals not showing up in reverse tracks and glitches in some missions. But with a couple fixes and a new interface it could really be sold stand alone  :applaud:

I'd like to try this wrapper, but can't even get Outrun2 up and running. Apparantly I need a Jennifer shader that I can't seem to find a linky for anywhere. If anyone can help me out please feel free to pm me thanks.

You are asking about running the PC game Outrun 2 Coast to Coast, not OR2SPSDX on Teknoparrot, yes? All you should need to install is DirectX9c...

Outrun2 on TeknoParrot. I have many other games running on TP, but can't get Outrun2 to start. I'm scoured the interwebs and found I need a Jennifer resolution patch but can't find it anywhere.

OK, wrong thread; this one for Howard's FXT mod for the PC game :)

There's a thread a few below this on on OR2 SP on Teknoparrot. Boomslang just updated TP two days ago to put the OR2 respatch back in, so you shouldn't need the external patcher. More info about graphics patches for NVidia, AMD and Intel in that thread :)

Hi there. It's good to hear you have had some luck with the G29!

May I just ask if you are able to play several games in a row with the FFB still working ok? On the G920 it sticks/stops during the first game.

Thanks!

Sorry it took forever to reply here. I'm not in a good position to answer as my computer which ran OutRun has been out of commission for months now. I'm working to stabilize it and then I should be able to tell you more on this matter.

Nope, only a beta mod that doesn't look very good (old and new graphics together) as part of the FXT package.

Greetings Howard.

the mod works good and all but i have a single problem. hen i try to play in windowed mode, it stays for a spit second and switches to fullscreen by itself. and on the unmodded game it stays windowed. do you have a reason for this and know how to fix it? thanks.

Welp, it's official: Outrun 2006: Coast to Coast is now old enough to feature in the latest issue of Retro Gamer Mag as a genuine retro title. This fact doesn't sit right in my brain. I mentioned this on my Twitter and someone else pointed out that it's older now than the Mega Drive port of Outrun was when C2C released. It's bonkers, because the gulf between those 2 was just so immense, but Outrun 2 still looks (almost) like it could be a contemporary racing game. Especially when you're playing SPDX or PC C2C upscaled.

First of all, incredible mod. I've dreamed of being able to play Outrun 2 on a wheel at home ever since the arcade that had the game shut down. Ok, now to my issue. How do I get that "specific game settings" window with the centering spring settings (A user named Potato had this screenshotted in an earlier post if you want reference)? I have FXT 2.5 installed and I'm trying to get my g920 to have a centering force. Right now it only has ffb (which is spot on btw) but it doesn't return back to its original position. I saw in earlier posts to change some settings to 7500 and I already did that but nothing has changed. I don't have any mods on my wheel and it's completely stock. I've set the centering spring in the logitech app to 0 because I heard that it makes a difference but it's the same. Is there some way I can get the centering force to work without making any modifications to my wheel? It's a lot more difficult playing without this force on wheel so I'm really hoping someone can help me out.

That is pretty nuts. I've been playing it a lot lately and it definitely doesn't feel retro.

And when I say I've been playing it a lot, I actually mean across two versions: C2C running on the 360 via OG Xbox emulation and Outrun Online Arcade on the 360 as native code. Sure, the layer is missing some content but the boot times are way faster and the higher res graphics do make a difference.

Mr. Thunderwing, I take it you haven't ever come across any way to make OOA playable over 360 system link or Xlink etc. - instead of playing it over Xbox Live?

(Forgive me if you have the PS3 version and wouldn't know either way, of course!)

I've got the PS3 version I'm afraid, no idea if there's any way to play OOA with other people other than the Xbox live (no idea what Xlink is). Your version of Coast 2 Coast will work in local multiplayer on the 360 though, just using an OG Xbox system link cable - You can hook it up to another 360 or an OG Xbox. It's not as pretty as OOA, but it's actually the better option content-wise with all the extra cars, stages and music. If you use a router, you can add in extra consoles and you don't specifically need to use a system link cable for that, just a bog standard yellow Ethernet cable will do.

Thanks Mr. T and I appreciate your time and expertise on this. My apologies I wasn't clearer here. I do already have several Xbox 360 consoles and all with copies of C2C and OOA available to them. For multiplayer, I have a network hub to play C2C.

But because that's running on OG Xbox emulation, the load times are slow and the graphics aren't as good compared to OOA (which is native Xbox 360 code).

Yes, OOA has less content but it might be better for multiplayer races for the above reasons - so I was hoping there was a way to get it working in the absence of Xbox Live. Perhaps a way to setup your own server or simulate a P2P game locally?

And Xlink is tunneling software which allows you to play system link games over the internet - in my case, I guess I'm looking for the opposite!

But I understand that you play.on PS3 and again, appreciate your help nonetheless.

Hello I just installed this mod, I used version 2.5 - is that the latest ?

unfortunately it breaks the control support in the game. In the "vanilla" version, my gamepad works fine but in this version using the FXT launcher the d-pad works, and the analogue stick works/is "seen" when configuring controls BUT when I play the game the car does not steer. I've tried also leaving the gamepad assignment blank in the FXT config too. Something strange going on here and I hope someone can help ! also I still have the HD in standard/blurry definition it seems.

any pointers would be much appreciated i am not the sharpest knife in the drawer, thank you !

Yep.

Works fine with my original Xbox 360 controllers (both wired and wireless), must be some driver issue with your device and the mod. Try using the free (and VERY useful) app XinputPlus to change how buttons and sticks work. It's not very user-freindly but there's a few tutorials online and it really helps with many old titles.

Keep in mind that using the FXT-launcher to remap the gears breaks the ability to gear-drift. You can still use the brakes to drift though.

Yes im finally back in years and years in idle. Currectly im is checking about this mod for the outrun game. Im have found 2 issues with my also old faction g27 from Logitech.

Yep im only playing this game recenctly now (but allways love playing the game at the arcade near me, which actuelly has extractly this game).

Etc manual 3th gear does not seen to been working. Its does register correctly on the screen, but trottle does no longer works. All other gears works throught.

Also this game only works in 60fps, which also cause issues on a 144fps display. While its possible to get auto switch to get work, but then get all kind of issues and crashes its seen.

Also its would been nice to add up/down mapped as well, which the game didated is so stupid designed here.(forced x/y on a spletted speeder/trottle, wow).
Decade Old Work: MultiFE, ArcadeMusicBox
Today Works: Various Spectrum Next games from Rusty Pixels and html5 games.

Just uploaded a 2 Player versus video on a twin Outrun 2 SP cabinet this weekend, if anyone's interested in seeing the Chihiro SP game running natively (this was a first for me).

I’m getting a bug where the game continuously presses arrow left on its own. This isn’t present with the vanilla game. Even binding it to another key won’t fix it. This makes the game unplayable, the car is always steering to the left. Any idea how to fix this? Couldn’t find anyone having the same issue as me with this mod, so I’m asking here for help.

Amazing mod. However the game won't seem to update my records in time attack mod or scores in Outrun mode. any way to resolve this issue? The file rankings.dat seems to be missing from the savegame folder.
